Does anyone else remember this offering from BBC Panorama 1957? In the days when pasta wasn't a pantry staple and people hadn't travelled and experienced food from overseas, this 3 minute documentary featured a Swiss family apparently harvesting their 'spaghetti tree'.
At the time spaghetti was relatively little-known in the UK, so many Britons were unaware that spaghetti is made from wheat flour and water; a number of viewers afterwards contacted the BBC for advice on growing their own spaghetti trees. CNN called it the "the biggest hoax that any reputable news establishment ever pulled.".
